Measuring Ad Performance: ROAS, CPA and MER Explained for Small Stores

Advertising dashboards are full of numbers, and each platform reports its own version of success. Small cross-border stores often make decisions based on the wrong metric, scaling campaigns that look profitable in one dashboard while the business as a whole loses money. Three metrics, used together, give a clearer picture.

ROAS: return on ad spend

ROAS equals revenue attributed to ads divided by ad spend. A ROAS of 3 means three units of revenue for every unit spent.

Strengths: easy to understand, available in every ad platform.
Weaknesses: it uses revenue, not profit, and it depends on each platform's attribution. Two platforms may both claim credit for the same order, so adding their ROAS figures overstates results.

CPA: cost per acquisition

CPA equals ad spend divided by the number of conversions, usually purchases.

Strengths: easy to compare with your margin per order. If your gross profit per order is 20 and your CPA is 25, you lose money on each first order.
Weaknesses: like ROAS, it depends on attribution, and it treats all orders as equal regardless of value.

MER: marketing efficiency ratio

MER equals total store revenue divided by total marketing spend across all channels, over the same period.

Strengths: it does not depend on any platform's attribution, so it reflects reality at the business level. If you increase ad spend and MER falls sharply, the extra spend is not paying off.
Weaknesses: it does not tell you which channel or campaign is working.

Using them together

Use platform ROAS and CPA to compare campaigns, ads and audiences within a platform.

Use MER weekly to check whether total marketing is profitable.

Calculate your break-even ROAS and maximum CPA from your margin. For example, if your gross margin is 40 percent, break-even ROAS is 2.5 before other costs.

Add profit to the picture

Revenue metrics ignore returns, discounts, shipping and payment fees. Once a month, calculate contribution margin after ad spend: revenue minus product cost, shipping, fees, returns and marketing. That number decides whether you can scale.

Common mistakes

Judging campaigns too early, before enough conversions.

Comparing ROAS across platforms with different attribution windows.

Ignoring repeat purchases, which can make a high CPA acceptable.

Analytics and profit calculator tools are listed in the Facebook520 tool directory, and terms such as attribution window and contribution margin are explained in the Facebook520 cross-border encyclopedia.

Reddit can send highly engaged visitors to a brand, and its threads increasingly appear in search results and AI answers. It is also one of the platforms most hostile to obvious marketing. Brands that post promotional links in communities quickly get removed, downvoted or banned. This guide explains how to participate in a way that communities accept.

Understand how Reddit works

Reddit is a collection of communities called subreddits, each with its own rules and moderators. What is welcome in one community may be banned in another. Users value honesty, expertise and humour, and they are quick to spot disguised advertising.

Set up the account properly

Create an account that clearly represents a person at the brand or the brand itself. Do not pretend to be an unrelated customer.

Fill in the profile and disclose your affiliation in the bio.

Turn on two-factor authentication.

Read before you post

Before posting in any subreddit, read its rules and the most popular posts of the past month. Many communities ban self-promotion entirely, allow it only on certain days, or require a ratio of non-promotional contributions.

Contribute first

Spend the first weeks answering questions where you have genuine expertise. A useful, detailed answer without a link builds credibility. Over time, your profile history shows you are a real participant, which makes occasional mentions of your product more acceptable.

When mentioning your product

Disclose that you work for the company.

Only mention it when directly relevant to the question.

Mention alternatives too, including competitors, when that is honest.

Never ask friends or colleagues to upvote, and never use multiple accounts to support your own posts; Reddit treats this as vote manipulation.

Consider official options

Reddit offers ads and brand profiles. Promoted posts are clearly marked and follow ad policies, so they avoid the friction of organic promotion. Some communities also welcome official brand participation through AMAs (ask me anything sessions) organised with moderators.

Handling criticism

Reddit users will criticise brands openly. Respond calmly, factually and once. Arguing in long threads rarely helps.

Measure the right things

Track referral traffic and conversions, but also mentions and sentiment. On Reddit, a reputation for helpfulness is worth more than any single viral post.

Tutorials for setting up accounts on major overseas social platforms are collected on the Facebook520 homepage, and community and social media tools are listed in the Facebook520 tool directory.

When a business decides to enter a new country, the first research step is often a random web search that produces a mix of outdated blog posts, vendor advertising and forum threads. A more efficient method is to start from curated directories: lists of marketplaces, logistics providers, payment options and local tools organised by country. This article explains how to use that approach and what to watch out for.

Why start with a directory

A good directory gives you the landscape in one view. Instead of discovering the main marketplaces of a country one at a time, you see the major players side by side. That makes it easier to ask the right questions early: which platforms dominate, which payment methods are common, which carriers serve the region, and which tools local sellers use.

Step 1: Map the marketplaces

List every marketplace in the directory for your target country. For each one, note:

The categories it is known for.

Whether it accepts foreign sellers directly or through a programme.

The languages its interface and listings use.

Its typical customer profile, if known.

Then visit each marketplace as a shopper. Search for your product type and look at prices, number of sellers and review counts.

Step 2: Map payments and payouts

Check which payment methods local shoppers expect: cards, bank transfers, wallets, cash on delivery or instalments. Then check which payout options exist for foreign sellers. A market where you cannot reliably receive money is not ready for you yet.

Step 3: Map logistics

Identify carriers that serve the country, typical delivery times and whether overseas warehousing is available. Note any import restrictions for your product category.

Step 4: Map local tools and media

Directories often list local news sites, social platforms and seller communities. Reading local industry news for a week tells you about current regulations, competition and seasonal events.

Step 5: Verify everything

Directories are a starting point, not the final word. Platforms change policies, tools close and new players appear. Before you make decisions, check each important source directly and note the date you checked.

Turning research into a decision

Summarise the findings on a single page: market size signals, best-fit marketplace, payment and logistics plan, main risks and first-month budget. If the page is full of unknowns, run a small test before committing more resources.

Useful starting points

The Facebook520 cross-border navigation homepage groups marketplaces and tools by country and region, including dedicated pages such as the EU123 European e-commerce navigation and regional pages for the US, Japan and Korea, Southeast Asia, Latin America and India.
